Why Should You Call SERVPRO® After a Fire?

2/28/2024 (Permalink)

After this garage fire, the home was badly damaged by smoke and soot. SERVPRO of East Coral Springs was able to remediate the home.

Why should you call SERVPRO® after a fire?

After a fire, smoke, soot, heat, and water can damage your Coral Springs home or business. If you aren’t sure how to handle the aftermath of a fire, it's wise to call in the experts at SERVPRO of East Coral Springs. They'll be able to help you assess just how severe the damage is and what you need to do next.

Soot and smoke can cause problems.

Even though the fire may not have caused much damage to your home, you still need to call a restoration professional. Soot and smoke can cause health effects, damage to your home's structure, and mold growth. They can also cause water damage and electrical problems. This can lead to even more damage on top of what was already done.

By calling a restoration professional after an accident, you can avoid these potential issues!

Cleaning up even a small fire isn't a DIY job.

While cleaning up may be the first thing you do after a fire, it shouldn’t be the only thing. If you don't know where to start, call a restoration professional. A professional can help ensure that your property is protected while they're working on repairs and minimize further damage caused by water or smoke. The fire restoration experts can also assist with filing insurance claims and making sure everything gets covered—including belongings that were damaged in the fire but weren’t initially declared as part of your claim (like smoke-damaged clothing). They also know how to handle hazardous materials so that these dangerous materials aren't spread around your home when you try to clean up on your own!

There are a lot of considerations after a fire, but their restoration experts can help.

A fire is a traumatic event, and you'll need to take care of the aftermath. There are many factors that should be considered when deciding what to do after a fire, including the extent of damage and how much time has passed since it happened.

People often think they can handle cleaning up even a small fire themselves, but this isn't usually true. In addition to damage caused by the actual flames, there are other elements that can cause problems later on: soot and smoke residue will stick around for months if not cleaned regularly; water used in fighting the fire may have damaged your belongings; chemicals used to extinguish fires might have left behind lingering odors or stains; electrical wiring might need repair or replacement due to damage from heat exposure; plaster walls might crack from excess moisture.

If you've suffered a fire in your home or business, don't worry. The team at SERVPRO of East Coral Springs is here to help. We can take care of everything from removing soot and smoke damage to restoring your property back to normal. It's important that you act quickly after a fire to avoid serious problems for your home or business. If you need any assistance please call us today at (954) 406-7771.

Mold Growth in Your Garage

9/8/2021 (Permalink)

Mold growth in the garage can go from a minor problem to a major issue quickly.

South Florida homeowners know all about September humidity and rainy days. From tropical storms and hurricanes to heavy rainstorms and afternoon showers, Florida garages take a beating when it comes to moisture. Unfortunately, the summer season in Florida creates the perfect combination of elements for mold growth. From the humidity and moisture to the dark environment, a garage is often a hotspot for mold growth in Sunshine State homes.

While the interior of a home is protected from the outside elements, the garage is vulnerable to the exterior elements. Even the tightest sealed garages will have some exposure between the floor and the edge of the garage door. Plus, when pulling into the garage in a rainstorm water will inevitably get inside. Heavy rainstorms can even cause water to pool in the garage, further exacerbating the problem. As such, the garage is a danger zone for mold growth.

Prevention is key to keeping mold growth out of the garage. All South Florida homeowners should be sure to follow these tips to prevent this from happening:

  1. Regularly inspect your garage, checking for leaks and areas where excessive moisture may be present
  2. Inspect the roof of the garage to make sure that there are no damaged gutters or broken pipes
  3. Consider ventilation methods to try to control the humidity in the garage
  4. Try to keep the garage as well-lit as possible
  5. Make sure that the garage door is well sealed and be sure to replace seals when they are beginning to wear
  6. Pay attention to storage and keep your garage organized
  7. Make sure that anything that is stored in the garage has no water on it
  8. Avoid using wood or paper products in the garage
  9. Keep plant growth around the garage to a minimum
  10. Contact a professional at the first sign of any mold growth

Mold growth in the garage can go from a minor problem to a major issue quickly. It is extremely important for you to apply the above tips in your home. If any mold growth is identified, it is critical to contact a mold removal specialist as soon as possible.

Getting Ready for Florida's 2021 Hurricane Season

4/20/2021 (Permalink)

Here are some tips in order to be best prepared for Florida’s 2021 Hurricane Season.

The 2021 Hurricane season officially starts on June 1st 2021 and lasts all the way through November 30th.  According to The Climate Adaptation Center (CAC),  they are “predicting a very active season with 20 named storms—less than last year—10 of which may be hurricanes.” Of these storms, 5 of them are predicted to be major hurricanes that could be Category 3-5 strength. A normal hurricane season is usually defined as 3 major hurricanes.

Unfortunately, it does not look like Florida is going to be able to escape hurricane season this year. There is an increased risk of hurricanes this year due to the weakening of the Bermuda high. This Bermuda high is a high pressure zone located in the Atlantic Ocean that was responsible for steering many hurricanes in 2020 away from a direct hit of the mainland in Florida.

According to AccuWeather lead hurricane forecaster Dan Kottlowski, “The pattern that’s setting up is that we could see more of these early-curving storms. That could threaten the east coast a little more this year than previous years.” In order to prepare for this years hurricane season in Florida, it is important to get started early.

Here are some tips in order to be best prepared for Florida’s 2021 Hurricane Season:

Creating a Hurricane Kit

It is very important to have a hurricane kit on hand in case you need to evacuate quickly or need to shelter in place. When people realize a hurricane is coming, many people are filled with a state of panic and run to the grocery store to get supplies to prepare. In this situation, grocery stores are in chaos and can run out of items very quickly. To avoid this situation, prepare a hurricane kit ahead of time with necessary supplies. Some of the most common and recommended items include:

  • Bottled water and non-perishable food items (recommended to have enough for at least 3 days)
  • First-aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Water-proof container for valuables, cash, and important documents
  • Lighter or matches
  • Cooler and ice packs
  • Pet and/or baby supplies if applicable

Securing Your Home

In the event of an hurricane, you will want to know the best ways to prepare you home against high pressure winds, heavy rain, and flooding.

  • Use hurricane shutters or wood to cover windows
  • Make sure roof is well maintained and, if possible, secure straps or clips to securely fasten it.
  • Bring any outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage bins, etc. inside.
  • Stay away from windows and doors.

Preparing for a Power Outage

During a storm it is very likely to lose power. In case this happens, there are other things you should do to remain prepared.

  • Make sure your car has a full tank of gas instead of waiting until the last minute and having to deal with long lines and gas stations running out.
  • Have extra cash on hand in ATMs shut down.
  • Charge your cell phone and limit use or use airplane mode.
  • Fill the bathtub with water for the purpose of washing and flushing.

Preventing Mold Growth in Your Bathroom

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

Preventing mold growth in your bathroom means taking proactive measures to keep your home in the best shape possible.

There are certain areas of every home that are prone to mold growth. Elements like moisture and darkness create the perfect breeding area for mildew and mold to thrive. While many people think of mold in their kitchen, the bathroom is actually one of the biggest culprits for mold growth in your home. The combination of heat, darkness, moisture, and typically a lack of ventilation means that bathrooms are especially vulnerable to mildew.

Sometimes mold is easy to spot. It can discolor walls or grow on tiles, but in other scenarios it can be much more difficult to spot. A lingering odor or a slightly discolored ceiling can reveal a major mold problem. Since mold remediation can be quite a headache, the best practice is to avoid mold growth altogether. Preventing mold growth in your bathroom means taking proactive measures to keep your home in the best shape possible.

The following are some great tips for preventing mold growth in your bathroom:

  • Use the fan at all times when showering and let it run for at least 30 minutes following a shower. This will keep the bathroom properly ventilated.
  • Regularly wash the rugs and curtains in the bathroom.
  • Consider purchasing a dehumidifier for the bathroom.
  • Use an all-purpose cleaner to regularly clean your bathroom.
  • Consistently check the toilet and sink for any leaks.
  • Try to keep shower walls dry.
  • Keep bathing products outside of the bathroom.
  • Let as much light into the bathroom as possible.
  • If the bathroom floors gets wet, mop it up as soon as possible.
  • Seal all grout lines.

While some of these tips seem obvious, it can be easy to neglect to maintain these important measures. If you do notice any mold growth in your bathroom, it is important to call a professional right away. Our mold remediation team has years of experience in repairing mold damage large and small. Working Hard to Keep Fighting COVID-19

Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned is a defensive cleaning program that goes beyond janitorial or carpet cleaning, it is a higher standard of clean.

While South Florida is eager to get back to “normal”, the numbers of COVID-19 cases do not seem to be going down. From homeowners to business owners, keeping things clean and sanitized is imperative. It is easy to fall into the trap of complacency when it comes to dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. People are tired of dealing with masks and sanitizers, making it easy for some to simply go back to the way they used to do things. It is important, however, to remember that with rising numbers precautions must still be taken.

The world has had to completely re-evaluate the way in which it operates. At home, families are sanitizing and washing hands with great frequency. In businesses, the staff is working diligently to keep the public spaces sanitized, regularly cleaned, and enforce mask policies. These changes are difficult to get used to, but they are extremely important for the greater good.

At SERVPRO, we understand the importance of sanitation. In fact, we have worked tirelessly for years in our cleaning services department. As such, when COVID-19 hit, we knew we had a responsibility to our community. We launched Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned recently to continue our mission of keeping our communities safe and clean. In doing so, we are able to help local families and businesses to protect themselves and others.

Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned is a defensive cleaning program that goes beyond janitorial or carpet cleaning, it is a higher standard of clean. This is proactive viral pathogen cleaning that helps ensure the cleanliness of the restaurants, businesses, and public spaces in the communities we all call home. There are many things a family can do to begin repairing any destruction, but a certified professional will likely be needed to get rid of any serious health or structural threats. Contaminated storm surges or floods can carry pathogens and become a breeding ground for mold. If allowed to fester, these mold spores can spread throughout the building and become even more difficult to remove. In many cases, governmental agencies could condemn the structure if the microbial threat is too great.

The main reason a home is sensitive to water damage is because moisture is difficult to detect once the floods recede. Standing liquids can encourage microbial growth within 24 hours and can saturate all kinds of textiles and seep through drywall. Moisture may collect behind the walls, where mold and bacteria may multiply out of sight.

Professional restoration services can quickly identify what items in the home are compromised by water damage. Normally, anything that is porous may need to be discarded if it has come in contact with contaminated fluids. These items, like mattresses, box springs, pillows and particle board, trap more moisture than other materials and foster the growth of microbes.

A family can prepare for professional cleaning by getting rid of these items before the technicians arrive, but be sure to properly record and itemize the items for insurance purposes prior to disposing. Once professionals arrive at the building, they will be able to track down any pockets of excess moisture and remove them.

It’s important for a family to hire professionals that are certified through a reputable organization. Technicians trained in this area know how to find compromised areas and do what it takes to restore them.

Water can spread throughout your property in mere minutes, saturating everything in its path. Items like the walls, floors, upholstery and your belongings can all be casualties of water.

The effects of water damage within the first 24 hours include:

  • Drywall beginning to swell and break down
  • Metal surfaces beginning to tarnish
  • Furniture beginning to swell and crack
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper items spreading and staining
  • The beginning of a musty odor

The damage continues to worsen as time goes on. Between 48 hours and a week later, you could begin to see:

  • The growth and spreading of mold and mildew
  • Swelling and warping of doors, windows and studs
  • Metal beginning to rust and corrode
  • Paint beginning to blister
  • Wood flooring swelling and warping
  • The possibilities of serious biohazard contamination

If left unchecked for more than a week, water damage may lead to greatly increased restoration times and costs and may also impact structural safety.

When your customer calls to report a fire damage, consider passing along the following useful tips to help limit the damage.

  • Limit movement in the area to prevent further damage
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on indoor plants.
  • Change HVAC filters and tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC systems.
  • Do not attempt to wash walls or painted surfaces. Leave that job to us!

Clean Sweep for Ducts
Meet Clean Air Regulations

When addressing air quality, inspecting the ductwork is our first order of business. Dirty ducts can work to circulate odors, contaminates like mold and irritating dust throughout the building.
We use a proven Portable Ventilation & Air Duct Cleaning System to examine duct work and make a clean sweep removing years of dust and grime.

Protection from Litigation
While molds are found naturally in the environment, when they begin to grow inside buildings some people can become ill. Some experts disagree about the more controversial fine details of mold, but they all agree that if you have mold, it needs to be removed.

Control Moisture and Reduce Mold Act within the First 24-48 Hours
Tips:
* Correct any water leaks or standing water
* Remove standing water under cooling coils or air handling units
* properly maintain humidifiers, if used
* Replace wet or visibly moldy insulation materials
